As most of you know by now, I think nudity (link) is just fine. But that is when it is getting naked for the sake of getting naked.

I do generally object when a bunch of hippies strip down to make some kind of point. It just seems degrading somehow.

But in this particular case, I think it’s great

In case you don’t know, Rugby players, like swimmers and wrestlers, seem to have a predisposition to get naked. However, Girl Rugers are not generally thought of as pinup girls.

So back in 2005 when the girls of Oberlin College were sitting around one freezing winter day and came up with the idea of a team pinup calendar, it was not surprising they met with some resistance. Most of it was the usual objectification argument, which I don’t want to get into right now, but lets just say it has plenty of merit.

And so they put some real thought into what they were trying to achieve by doing the calendar (other than fundraising), and came up with a pretty awesome mission statement:

“In a society that brands female competitive sports athletes as masculine, this calendar parodies the standard beauty myth, by juxtaposing the concept of the seductive and submissive pinup with images of women who assert themselves not only as strong athletes, but also as empowered women.”

So here is a scrum, something that is seen quite often in after game parties:

Oberlin has now been doing the calendar for two years. And it seems to have become something of a trend.

I think these girls have actually avoided the strip tease and are in the realm of empowement (though I am not really sure what that means).

And its good they are raising some money.

But I think I know what the real deal here is.

Some people just like to get naked.
